DCDC PROJECT HUB
Anti-Sleep Alarm for Drivers using Eye Blink Sensor
2ND YEAR• Embedded• MEDIUM
Problem statement
Driver drowsiness is a major cause of road accidents, especially in late-night or long-distance driving.
Abstract
This project uses an eye blink sensor based on IR reflection mounted on a spectacle frame. A microcontroller analyzes blink frequency and eye closure duration. If eyes remain closed for longer than a threshold, indicating sleepiness, a buzzer and vibration motor are activated to alert the driver.
Components required
- Eye blink sensor (IR transmitter + receiver)
- Microcontroller (Arduino / similar)
- Buzzer and vibration motor
- LED indicator
- Power supply or battery pack
- Mounting on spectacles or headband

Working
The IR sensor produces pulses corresponding to eye blinks. The microcontroller measures time between blinks and duration when the eye is closed. When it detects continuous closure beyond a safe limit or very low blink rate over a period, it triggers the buzzer and vibration motor to wake the driver.
Applications
- Safety system for bus and truck drivers
- Car drowsiness alert add-on
- Demo for biomedical sensing
- Research base for advanced driver monitoring
